Character history-
Bokutō no Ryū was a well known gangster in his home city, having a passionate and loyal gang of followers constantly aiding in his quest to find his "Best place." A place where people like he, outcasts could come together and be happy.
He had thought the local graveyard would make a good "Best place" but made the mistake of busting up the grave marker for the ancient samurai warrior Amidamaru. Along with this his crew beat up young Manta for spying on them. This brought the Shaman Yoh to them and Ryu as well as his gang suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Yoh while possessed by the spirit of Amidamaru.
Having been run off from that "Best place" Ryu's gang began holding up in a new "Happy place", the abandoned Funbari Bowling Alley. Earlier that day Ryu had become very upset because not only had he suffered a humiliating defeat and had his pompador lopped off by Yoh but he had been turned down and slapped by Yoh's fiance Anna.
Depressed and despondent with a grudge Ryu was an easy target for the spirit of a bandit named Tokageroh. Tokageroh wanted revenge on Amidamaru for killing him hundreds of years prior and so the duo teamed up and Tokageroh possessed Ryu to end Yoh and Amidamaru once and for all. This involved kidnapping Manta and stealing the sword of Amidamaru from the local museum.
The confrontation does not end as they planned however as Amidamaru proves he values his new friendship with Yoh over his old sword. Tokageroh attempts to threaten Ryu's life to make Yoh and Amidamaru surrender but Ryu's gang stop him, begging him to stop behaving as he is, promising to be his friends forever because they don't want to see their leader turn into a scumbag.
In the end Tokageroh cannot take Ryu's life or Yoh's and leaves, with Ryu now indebted to Yoh.
This event changed Ryu's view on things and he immediately got to work trying to help his friends succeed in their own lives, making sure each one of them got good honest jobs before he set out to travel to America and learn to be an expert chef. These plans were put on hold however to help Manta travel to Izumo to find out how Yoh was fairing in a new and improved training set. This training of death was supposed to increase his power however they were held up by Tamao who misread a prophecy and thought Manta and Ryu would be trouble for Yoh. Ultimately they all as well as Anna were there to meet Yoh as his training completed.
While in Izumo Ryu sought out the help of Yoh's grandfather to train to become a Shaman. He was only allowed to train after showing how dedicated he and Tokageroh were to the idea. They trained in the mountains together both becoming stronger. Ultimately he returned home won a fight against the BoZ Musical Shaman Monks. This duo defeat coupled with his acceptance in the Shaman fight by winning two of is pre matches proved just how strong Ryu had become. He even joined forces with Yoh and Horo Horo to help rescue Ren from his father's clutches. The team then fought their way to Ren's father and helped Ren to defeat him. They then returned home for further training before the Shaman fight would begin.
He was part of Yoh's circle of friends upon being air dropped into America for the next round of the Shaman fight. It is here that Ryu perfects his power "Oversoul Big thumb." A rather creative move used to summon the American truck driver Billy. Billy appears frequently for the series whenever the O.S is used...however in some situations he cannot make it to give Ryu arrive despite trying his best.
After the young man Lyserg joined the team (Whom Ryu doted upon for his shota beauty) They set out to discover the location of the Patch Village to complete this round of the Shaman fight. On the way they were attacked by one of Haos followers known as Boris and Ryu not only defeated him but did it without killing him. Sadly this would not last and after Ryu fainted from exhaustion the X-laws killed Boris.
Ryu found himself on Yoh's team for the Shaman battles to come time and time again proving his loyalty and strenght, but at the end of the tourny it became apparent that Hao would have to win if the Shaman's stood any chance of defeating them. They learned of the legendary five warriors who would face Hao after he became the Shaman King, and though Ryu was not one of them he helped the Shaman's fight their way to get to Hao in an attempt to stop him.
During this seemingly suicidal run at Hao through the Patch officals Ryu did in fact die and had to be revived by Faust. He felt deeply ashamed and worried that he was just a burden, however he proved himself useful in fights and once reaching the final plant where there would be no air, he offered his Oversoul to protect the others while they fought the Patch Offical in charge of the Plant of the universe.
When all was said and done Ryu returned home to the Funbari Onsen after Hao had been defeated, and became head Chef at the Onsen. He and Tamao have spent the last several years raising Anna and Yoh's son Hana and taking care of the Onsen for them while the couple traveled the world taking care of Shaman duties and helping others. As part of a reunion Ryu and Hana set out on a quest to find and bring four of the five legendary warriors back to the Onsen in time for Yoh and Anna's homecoming.
It has been roughly a month since the night of the reunion when Ryu arrived in the digital world.
Character personality-
While Ryu may at first glance appear to be a rough, crude and rude individual at his core he is a softie. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is fiercely loyal to his friends. His ultimate goal in life, to find his "Best place" seems to have been achieved as he has found it living with the Shamans.
While still short tempered and hectic in his mannerisms a few years have done wonders to calming down the loud hero...though one can never expect him to become completely mellow and in control of his emotions.
He has a soft spot for people who feel like they are alone and do not belong.
He has also taken up a role as Hana's Big brother of sorts and tends to take Hana with him on errands and adventures when they are warranted.
One of his other goals in life is to find love, and while he has developed strong feelings for Tamao at the moment there has been little on that respective relationship. He is sadly still a loser in the romance department.
One would best describe Ryu as "A simple minded Wiseman."
Digimon personality- Excitable, loud and more then a little short fused Bokomon is a overeager ball of nerves. He tends to run first and ask questions later...and all of these questions answers can be found in his encyclopedia.
While he wants to help save the world he doesn't see himself as a fighter and frequently has to rely on Ryu's courage to push him into conflict. When he does fight he is cautious and careful about his strikes making sure to take careful aim and defend himself rather then focus on powerhouse punches.
A quiet little Nerd in a family of proud warriors Bokomon never felt like he belonged anywhere in particular until he met Ryu. Yggdrasil had to have a plan as to why these two would be partnered together and he's determined to find out what it is.
Character abilities-
Ryu is an accomplished fighter even without his Shaman powers, kick boxing, street brawling and martial arts are all within his strong suits, and wielding a wooden sword with amazing skill and strength is his specialty.
As a Shaman he has the ability to integrate the soul of Tokagero into either himself or his sword, as well as forming oversouls for combat. While he was never the strongest of the Shamans he knew he could more then hold his own in a fight and has worked as hard if not harder then most of them. (Naturally his Shaman abilities will be nerfed to the appropriate levels...a matter that he will be deeply troubled by after so many years)
He is also a master chef and integrates alot of his cooking skills into combat.
Special technique: Oversoul Big Thumb: Intagrating Tokagero into his Thumb Ryu can summon the mysterious driver Billy the Bearmon. When possible Billy the Bearmon will arrive when the oversoul is used and is always happy to give Ryu and his friends a ride. This is a kind deed that Ryu attempts not to abuse.
